Prepare your trip > What to eat > Mackerel
The mackerel has a deep-rooted history in Mutriku, a coastal municipality in the Basque Coast Geopark. Traditionally, this town has been an important fishing centre, with mackerel being one of the main fish caught and consumed.
Over the years, mackerel fishing has been not only an economic activity but also part of Mutriku’s culture and gastronomy, reflecting the connection between the community and its marine environment.
On your visit to Mutriku enjoy the traditional recipe: roast mackerel. If you’re in this town in April, set aside the first Saturday of the month to attend the “Berdel Eguna”, a day when the fishermen of Mutriku get together to hand out more than 20,000 pintxos that allow you to taste mackerel in new ways.
