Hondarribia

Hondarribia is a coastal town at the eastern edge of Gipuzkoa, set between the Bay of Biscay, the Bidasoa estuary, the Jaizkibel massif and the Jaizubía marshland. Its walled old town is the best-preserved in Gipuzkoa: narrow cobbled streets, noble stone houses and sections of medieval wall form a historically coherent ensemble that retains much of its original character.

Gastronomy is one of the most distinctive features of the town. A fishing tradition, the local txakolí wine and a generation of award-winning chefs come together in a culinary scene that spans both formal dining and the bar culture of pintxos, where creativity and quality are a consistent presence.

The surrounding territory adds fine sandy beaches, the trails and lighthouse of Jaizkibel, and the protected wetlands of Jaizubía. The town's main annual event is the Alarde on 8 September, a procession commemorating the victory over the French army during the siege of 1638, observed each year in fulfilment of a vow made to the town's patron, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
