Guided visit with tasting at Bodega Berroja, Urdaibai

  • Hugging the coast
    Bilbao — Lekeitio

Description

Bodega Berroja sits at a natural vantage point over the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, from which landmarks such as Santimamiñe, Gernika, the estuary mouth and the Bocineros Mountains of Bizkaia can be located. The visit takes in the vineyard, where guides explain the sustainable management of the native varieties Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza, and the Riesling variety, grown in plots shaped by the land's topography and aspect. The vineyard is surrounded by native woodland species — oak, chestnut, ash and holm oak among them — integrated into a farming approach that respects the local ecosystem. Inside the winery, the process of making txakoli is explained. The visit concludes with a tasting of two of the bodega's txakolis paired with local artisan products: Idiazabal cheese and gildas. For travellers moving through the Basque Country in stages, this stop brings together landscape, winemaking tradition and local gastronomy in a single experience.
