Description
Vitoria (Vitoria-Gasteiz) is the capital of Euskadi-Basque Country and the seat of the Basque Parliament. Its urban layout reflects two complementary realities: a medieval historic quarter with an almond-shaped plan, considered one of the most representative in Euskadi, and a modern city that has made sustainability one of its defining features. The Green Belt, a 30-kilometre peri-urban circuit that can be walked or cycled, connects the natural spaces surrounding the city and exemplifies an urban model oriented towards sustainable mobility and engagement with the natural environment. This commitment has earned the city the international Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification as a sustainable tourism destination. Within the historic quarter, the Cathedral of Santa María stands out as a major heritage landmark: it was recognised in 2015 as part of the Northern Way of Saint James UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city also offers a varied cultural and museum programme that complements its historical and natural value within Euskadi-Basque Country.
