Shepherd for a Day in the Urkiola Natural Park

In the Urkiola Natural Park, at shepherd Patxi Solana's farmhouse in the Mendiola neighbourhood of Abadiño, this roughly four-hour experience is offered for families and groups. The morning begins at 10:00 with two workshops: in the cheese and curd workshop, participants make curds using both traditional and modern methods while learning about Idiazabal PDO cheese, followed by a tasting; in the talo workshop, this traditional flatbread is prepared and eaten with chocolate. A visit to the stable allows guests to meet the flock of Latxa sheep and the ponies, feed them by hand, learn to milk, and interact with the animals. Throughout the day, the farmhouse's sheepdogs and cats are a constant presence, with the natural park landscape as a backdrop. The workshops wrap up around midday, and after the activity guests are welcome to stay for lunch, bringing their own food and making free use of the facilities.
