Description

The Rafa Gorrotxategi Chocolate Museum in Tolosa offers an experience that combines tasting and a guided visit centred on the history and making of chocolate. The activity unfolds in three parts. First, guests are welcomed in the shop and watch the documentary 'Txokolatea', which tells the story of how chocolate was made in the 17th century. Next comes the tasting itself: a journey from the raw cacao bean, through the three main types of chocolate, to cocoa butter, with the aim of identifying and analysing the differences between them. Finally, the Gorrotxategi family leads a tour of the museum, where visitors can see pre-Columbian metates, roasters, mills, the restored workshop of Juan Ignacio Garmendia — one of the first electric chocolate workshops in the Basque Country — and an extensive collection of utensils assembled over more than thirty years. Rafa Gorrotxategi is the third generation of a chocolatier family from Tolosa and has gathered pieces from America and Europe spanning over five centuries of cacao history. Advance booking is required and the activity lasts approximately one and a half hours.
