Orio

Orio is a coastal town in Gipuzkoa set at the point where the sea, the mountains and the mouth of the Oria river converge. Its historic quarter, known as Goiko Kale, dates from the twelfth century and preserves a labyrinth of steep cobbled streets long connected to the coastal Camino de Santiago, a route with which Orio has been linked for centuries. Along this path stand the hermitage of San Martín de Tours and the Baroque parish church of San Nicolás de Bari, perched at the top of the old town.

Gastronomy is one of the town's most deeply rooted traits. Sea bream and elvers are the signature products of a cuisine tied to the sea and the harbour, where open-air grills set up near the port are a familiar sight. Rowing is another defining feature: the Orio trainera, recognisable by its yellow colour, has a long record of success in regattas.

The town has two beaches, Antilla and Oribarzar, on either side of the estuary, and the nearby Pagoeta Natural Park, in the municipality of Aia, offers one of the most remarkable natural landscapes in Gipuzkoa.
