Getxo

Getxo is a municipality on the right bank of the Bilbao estuary, set on the Bay of Abra. It is made up of five distinct neighbourhoods with their own identities: Andra Mari, Algorta, Las Arenas, Neguri and Romo. Its character combines a bourgeois and residential architectural heritage with a close relationship to the sea, reflected in its beaches, cliffs and tradition of water sports.

The municipality's most internationally recognised landmark is the Bizkaia Bridge, a late-nineteenth-century transporter bridge linking Getxo with the municipality of Portugalete, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The Paseo de las Grandes Villas, a coastal promenade running along the municipality's shoreline, was listed in 2001 as a Cultural Asset with the status of Monumental Complex. The Old Port of Algorta, with its seafaring character and pintxos bars, is one of the most recognisable parts of Getxo and a natural stop on any itinerary along the right bank of the Nervión.
