Geological Routes along the Flysch of Bizkaia

  • Hugging the coast
    Bilbao — Lekeitio

Description

The Flysch of Bizkaia preserves in its cliffs and coastline one of the most striking geological sequences on the Basque shore. Along the municipalities of Sopela, Barrika, Gorliz, Bakio, and Armintza, layers of rock emerge that record millions of years of history — the time when this entire stretch of Uribe lay beneath sea level. The geological routes allow visitors to explore this landscape with a guide, identifying fossils and rock formations that explain how the territory has transformed over time. Each outing lasts approximately two hours and is best done in good weather and at low tide, to properly access the points of geological interest. Prior booking is required. For those travelling along the Basque coast, these routes offer a stop of a different kind: not just the beauty of the landscape, but the deep time written into its rocks
