Durango

Durango is the capital of the Durangaldea region in Bizkaia, located near the Urkiola Natural Park. Its old quarter concentrates the town's architectural heritage and serves as the social and cultural heart of the municipality.

Among its most notable monuments are the basilica of Santa María de Uribarri, Gothic in origin, whose wooden portico — supported by columns and pilasters — is the largest in Euskal Herria, and the parish church of Santa Ana, a Baroque temple beside the arch of the same name, the only surviving remnant of the six arches that once formed the old town wall. The Gothic cross of Kurutziaga, the Torre de Lariz and the town hall complete the heritage ensemble. Durango also hosts the Basque Book and Record Fair, a key fixture in Euskadi's cultural calendar.

The immediate natural surroundings, with the Urkiola Natural Park within easy reach, make Durango a natural starting point for exploring the Durangaldea territory.
