Medieval Durango: guided tour of the old town

Durango was founded in the twelfth century by the Lord of Bizkaia, and its old town preserves the traces of that medieval layout. This guided tour follows the outline of the original walled town, revealing how society was organised at the time through monuments that are still standing and unique of their kind. The route starts at the Kurutzesantu Museum and takes in the Town Hall — with its Rococo-style painted façade —, the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Arco de Santa Ana as the former gateway into the town, the Etxezarreta Palace — now the Museum of Art and History of Durango — and the portico of the Basilica of Santa María, regarded as the largest pillar-free portico in Europe. The route also stops at the Cruz de Kurutziaga, a symbol linked to the so-called Durango heresy. The visit lasts 90 minutes, takes a maximum of 25 participants and is suitable for ages 10 and over.
