Guided Tour of the Basque Country Mining Museum
- A journey between beginnings and the futureOrduña — Bilbao
Description
The Basque Country Mining Museum, located in Gallarta, preserves and shares the region's mining heritage through a collection gathered over many years by former miners and local volunteers from the surrounding mining communities. The guided tour, lasting approximately 75 minutes, takes visitors through the museum's galleries — featuring tools, machinery, and documentation on the area's main iron deposits, miners' working conditions, and the evolution of industrial extraction — before continuing to the Concha II open-pit mine, the most significant in the Basque region and the site of the former village of Gallarta. The tour ends at a faithful recreation of a historic miners' canteen: the Facundo Perezagua canteen. A stop that weaves together industry, collective memory, and landscape, and fits naturally into a route through the Basque Country's industrial heritage. Advance booking is required at least one week ahead.
