Aizpitta Interpretation Centre: guided visit to the Aizpea Mines

The Aizpea Mines, also known as the Mountain of Iron, are a 150-hectare mining site in Zerain where iron has been extracted since the 11th century. The site has been declared a Monumental Complex by the Department of Culture of the Basque Government and lies within the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, which gives it a dual significance: industrial and heritage on one hand, natural on the other. The visit follows the route that the ore took from extraction to the exit of the mining zone, making it possible to understand the iron transformation process and the mark it left on the landscape. The Aizpitta Interpretation Centre, created to gather and convey this history, presents the industrialisation of iron using modern technology and an accessible approach. A stop within the Goierri Mining Park that connects with the broader itinerary between Zerain, Mutiloa and Ormaiztegi, and helps visitors understand how iron mining shaped the identity of this Gipuzkoan comarca for centuries.
