Guided Tour of Pozalagua Cave

Pozalagua Cave lies within the Armañón Natural Park, in Karrantza-Harana, in the far west of Bizkaia. It was discovered by chance in 1957 when a dynamite charge at a nearby quarry blew open a hole in the mountainside, revealing an underground world. After a process of preparation and conditioning, the cave opened to the public in 1991, and that same accidental opening now serves as the entrance for visitors. The guided tour leads through the interior of the cavity, where stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones form a substantial underground landscape. The defining feature of Pozalagua is its eccentric stalactites: unlike conventional ones, these grow in any direction regardless of gravity, producing irregular shapes that resemble roots or coral. Geologists rank Pozalagua first in the world for the quantity, length and width of these formations.
