Plazaola-Leitzaran Greenway
- Reconnecting with your sensesDonostia/San Sebastián — Vitoria-Gasteiz
Description
The Plazaola-Leitzaran Greenway follows the route of the old Plazaola railway, which until 1953 linked San Sebastián (Donostia/San Sebastián) and Pamplona along 85 kilometres of track. Converted into a greenway, the current 64-kilometre route can be covered on foot or by bicycle through the heart of the Leitzaran valley, starting from Andoain.
The route preserves the industrial and cultural heritage of the former line: old stations, halts, 34 tunnels and bridges that mark the way and bear witness to the area's railway past. From the greenway, walkers and cyclists can access the protected natural space of the Leitzaran valley, with nearby points of interest such as the vulture viewpoint at Irurtzun.
The first stage, between Andoain and Leitza, covers 25 kilometres on virtually flat terrain. The route can be extended in both directions: towards Urnieta and San Sebastián at one end, and through the Larraun valley to Pamplona at the other, adding over 50 additional kilometres in total.
