Pasaia

Pasaia is a municipality in Gipuzkoa that opens onto the sea through a narrow estuary flanked by hills, in the Oarsoaldea area. Rather than a single, uniform place, it is composed of four neighbourhoods with their own distinct character: Donibane, with its arcaded street and tradition of boat women; Pasai San Pedro, on the opposite bank of the estuary; Trintxerpe, urban and industrial in feel; and Pasai Antxo, shaped by its working-class history and a vivid local festive life.

The port has been the backbone of local life for centuries. Maritime culture runs through the whole municipality: rowing as both sport and collective identity, industrial architecture tied to port activity, and projects such as Albaola, dedicated to recovering traditional Basque shipbuilding techniques. Victor Hugo visited and was captivated by the landscape and its people; the bertsolari Pedro Mari Otaño left from here to emigrate to the Americas; and the improviser Xenpelar once sang here to newlyweds in the town square.

Above the town, the cliffs of Mount Jaizkibel frame a coastline open to the Atlantic, adding a sweeping natural dimension to the already layered identity of Pasaia.
