Fishing visit on board the MATER in Pasaia

  • With lots of taste
    Zarautz — Donostia/San Sebastián

Description

The MATER is the last great Basque wooden tuna boat, now an Eco-Active Museum Ship moored in the port of Pasaia, in Gipuzkoa. The fishing visit takes visitors through the different spaces of the vessel to discover the daily life of Basque fishermen: the bridge where the skipper navigates and locates fish shoals, the deck and hold where teamwork drives the fishing process, and the galley and bunks where life unfolds during voyages lasting more than two weeks.\n\nThe visit includes hands-on experiences — trying out the effort of hauling a rod, curling up in a bunk — and a tasting of a northern tuna pintxo with a vegan option available, enjoyed with views of the bay. The visit also reflects on the sustainability of fishing methods and the importance of responsible consumption.\n\nThe MATER is a stop in its own right in Pasaia, connecting the maritime culture of the territory with a direct, participatory experience on board.
