Flysch Bizkaia

The Flysch of Bizkaia is a series of coastal rock formations stretching along part of the Biscay coastline, across municipalities including Getxo and those of the Uribe region. The term flysch comes from German and refers to the way these rocks were deposited: alternating layers of hard materials, such as sandstone, with softer ones like clay. Over millions of years, this process has produced a coastline of striking visual character and exceptional scientific interest.

The layered strata allow geologists to read different phases of Earth's geological history with unusual precision. A route connecting 16 Sites of Geological Interest offers a structured way to explore this record. Among the most significant spots is Gorondatxe beach in Getxo, where one of the rare golden spikes recognised worldwide is located — a stratigraphic marker that defines a globally significant geological boundary. Muriola beach in Barrika adds another dimension to this coastline: its cliffs served as a filming location for the Game of Thrones series.

The Flysch of Bizkaia brings together scientific value and a distinctive coastal landscape, making it a key reference point within the natural heritage of part of the Biscay coastline.
