Elciego
- A journey into the pastVitoria-Gasteiz — Laguardia
Description
Elciego is a municipality in the south of Rioja Alavesa, in the historical territory of Álava. Its geographical position defines it clearly: the Sierra de Toloño rises to the north, the River Ebro marks the southern boundary, and the villages of Lapuebla de Labarca and Baños de Ebro lie to the east and west respectively.
As in the rest of the comarca, life in Elciego revolves around wine and viticulture. The Rioja Denominación de Origen frames the productive character of the area, and the vineyard landscape surrounding the village reflects a longstanding dedication to growing the vine. Elciego has several wineries and has built a wine tourism offer that forms part of what makes Rioja Alavesa one of the main wine destinations in the Basque Country.
For those travelling through Rioja Alavesa, the village offers direct access to the viticulture landscape of the Ebro and to the wine culture that gives this territory its identity.
