Discover Laguardia: the historic centre and its medieval portico

Laguardia (Álava), the main town of Rioja Alavesa, is a walled medieval settlement that has preserved its historic character intact. Its cobbled streets, heraldic facades and ancient gateways invite unhurried exploration, with layers of history at every turn. Religious heritage is central to the visit: the Church of Santa María de los Reyes contains one of the best-preserved medieval porticos in the Basque Country, with polychrome decoration applied between 1696 and 1700 depicting angels, virgins, prophets and apostles within a Gothic arch of five archivolt rings. The tympanum shows scenes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin, topped by the Coronation of the Virgin. Access to the portico requires a ticket, which can be purchased in advance. The Church of San Juan Bautista rounds out the religious heritage on offer. Beneath the town, a network of underground cellars built throughout the 16th century opens a window into the wine culture of the Rioja Denominación de Origen. Laguardia stands as a key stop on any route through Álava and Rioja Alavesa.
