Bakio

Bakio is a coastal municipality in Bizkaia, located in the Uribe region between Mungia and Bermeo, surrounded by the Burgoa, Garbola and Jata mountains. Its shoreline of beach, cliffs and coves defines the character of the place, and from it the silhouette of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe — a protected biotope of remarkable scenery — stands out in the middle of the sea.

Bakio's architectural heritage spans several periods. The Gothic parish church of Andra Mari, built on the slopes of Mount Jata, and the 12th-century Romanesque church of San Pelaio are among the most notable. The 17th-century Baroque palaces of Ormatza and Elexpuru stand alongside 19th-century villas with Parisian influences such as Quinta-Torre. The Askada and Jata viewpoints offer sweeping panoramic views over the coastline.

Bakio is also txakoli country. The Txakolingunea Museum, part of both the Basque Coast Museum Network and the Basque Enogastronomic Museum Network, documents the history and culture of this characteristic Basque white wine, whose harvest is traditionally presented during the San José festivities.
