Last Monday of October in Gernika, traditional Basque fair

Description

The Last Monday of October is one of the most important agricultural fairs in the Basque Country, held every year in Gernika and drawing thousands of visitors throughout the day. With around 900 stalls spread across the town centre, the fair fills the streets with quality local produce, Basque craftsmanship and a lively festive atmosphere that lasts well into the night.

One of the most anticipated moments of the day is the competition for cheese, Bizkaia txakoli, honey, flowers, fruit and vegetables. The jury evaluates entries early in the morning and the award ceremony takes place at midday near the Fuente del Mercurio, followed by the charity auction of half of the winning cheese — an event that regularly draws bids of thousands of euros.

Throughout the day, visitors can find Eusko Label and organic farming produce, watch Basque craft demonstrations, listen to bertsolaris, follow the street parade and attend pelota matches (cesta punta and mano).
