Assembly Hall and the Tree of Gernika: free-access visit

Gernika-Lumo is home to one of the most symbolically significant sites in the Basque Country: the Assembly Hall and the Tree of Gernika, both declared Assets of Cultural Interest. For centuries, this was the meeting place of the communities of Bizkaia, where each parish sent its representatives to deliberate on the affairs of the Lordship beneath the foral oak. The Juntas Generales, abolished in 1876 along with the Fueros, were restored in 1979, and the building remains to this day the seat of Bizkaia's highest institutional body. Entry to the historic area is free, and the site is open every day except on plenary session days. Guided visits are available with prior booking. The site fits naturally into a broader itinerary: Gernika-Lumo is also the gateway to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, centred on the Gernika estuary, a natural area of exceptional richness that makes a compelling case for extending your stay.
