Zumaia

Zumaia is a coastal municipality in Gipuzkoa set in a bay where the Urola and Narrondo rivers meet, surrounded by mountains that drop to the sea as steep cliffs. It forms part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of the Basque Coast, alongside Deba and Mutriku, and its flysch cliffs — visible along the stretch from Itzurun beach to Deba — are one of the most recognised geological landmarks on the Basque shoreline.

The historic quarter, with its medieval layout, is dominated by the parish church of San Pedro, a 13th-century Gothic church housing a retablo by Juan de Antxieta declared a national monument. The streets also preserve the Zumaia and Ubillos palaces and the Olazábal and Goikotorre houses.

The beaches of Itzurun, close to the historic centre and sheltered by the hermitage of San Telmo, and Santiago, at the mouth of the Urola, complete the town's offer. Near the latter stands the Zuloaga Museum, housed in the painter's former home and studio, with part of his collection. Zumaia is also a stop on the Camino de Santiago and maintains a deep-rooted maritime tradition linked to the festivities of San Telmo.
