Essential Flysch: Boat Trip Through the Basque Coast Geopark
- Basque Country in Blue and GreenLekeitio — Zarautz
Description
Between Zumaia and Deba, the sea offers a vantage point that no coastal trail can match. Essential Flysch is a return boat trip through the Deba-Zumaia protected biotope, at the heart of the Basque Coast Geopark, to take in from the water one of the most complete geological records on Earth. The flysch cliffs — layers of sedimentary rock built up over more than 50 million years — rise more than 100 metres above the waterline, exposing the deep history of the planet in vertical cross-section. The route also reveals coves unreachable from land and one of the largest wave-cut platforms in Europe, broad rocky shelves that emerge at low tide. Departing from the Txomin Agirre jetty in Zumaia, the trip lasts approximately one hour and requires prior booking. The activity depends on sea conditions and may be cancelled in bad weather, in which case the Flysch on Foot tour may be offered as an alternative. For anyone travelling along the Basque coast, this boat trip provides a geological and visual reading of the landscape that no path can offer.
