Txingudi Bay

Txingudi Bay forms at the mouth of the Bidasoa river, at the northeastern tip of Gipuzkoa, where the Cantabrian Sea, the surrounding hills and the towns of Hondarribia, Irun and the French town of Hendaye converge. This natural border enclave has a distinct territorial identity, presided over by Mount Jaizkibel, which closes the landscape to the north and serves as a natural viewpoint over the bay and the sea.

The most significant natural area within the bay is Plaiaundi, included in the Txingudi Special Protection Area for Birds and the Txingudi-Bidasoa Site of Community Importance. Plaiaundi is also listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Its 24 hectares of marshland and lagoons serve as an internationally recognised refuge for migratory birds.

The bay combines this natural heritage with a setting accessible for walking, water sports on the Bidasoa and the Camino de la Bahía, a route that traces the perimeter of the estuary linking the three riverside municipalities.
