Description

Sukarrieta is a small municipality on the banks of the Mundaka estuary, in Bizkaia, within the territory of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It stands out for a unique territorial feature: it is the only municipality in Urdaibai with land on both banks of the estuary, giving it a particularly close relationship with the river mouth and its landscape.

On the right bank, in the Kanala neighbourhood, stands the church of Santa María de Legendika and its cemetery, with views over the marshland. On the left bank lies the main nucleus, with the church of San Andrés and access to the island of Txatxarramendi, where a large spa hotel once operated and established Sukarrieta as one of the pioneers of tourism in Bizkaia. Today the island is home to a botanical park. The municipality's heritage is completed by Toña beach and the Roman port of Portuondo.

The estuary and marshland surroundings offer good conditions for hiking and for discovering at close range the natural values of Urdaibai.
