Birdwatching by boat along the Urdaibai estuary
- Hugging the coastBilbao — Lekeitio
Description
The tour sets off from Txatxarramendi Island, near Sukarrieta, and travels upriver along the Mundaka estuary, passing by the municipalities of Busturia, Murueta and Gauteguiz de Arteaga. The route is timed to coincide with peak bird activity — shortly after sunrise or just before sunset, and ideally before the tide has fully risen. Over approximately 90 minutes, a certified guide specialised in the interpretation of Urdaibai's natural and cultural heritage accompanies the group, providing context on the reserve's ecology, history and traditions. Binoculars and an illustrated guide to the bird species that live in or migrate through the estuary are included. For travellers exploring the Basque Country by stages, this outing offers a quieter, water-level perspective on one of the region's most ecologically significant landscapes.
