Plentzia

    • Hugging the coast

    Description

Plentzia is a coastal town in Bizkaia, located around 25 kilometres from Bilbao in a bay it shares with the neighbouring town of Gorliz. The estuary is the defining feature of the municipality: it shapes its layout, organises its urban space and connects the inland area with the sea.

The historic centre, medieval in origin, brings together vernacular seafaring architecture alongside more formal, palatial-style buildings, forming an urban fabric that reflects the history of a town with a longstanding maritime tradition. Nearby, the Gazteluondo tidal mill is a singular remnant of the municipality's historical relationship with the water.

The coastline around Plentzia is part of the Bizkaia flysch territory, a geological landscape where rock strata exposed in the cliffs record millions of years of sedimentary history. The sheltered beach, which extends along the seafront promenade as far as Gorliz, completes a town where historic heritage and coastal setting reinforce each other.
