Museo Guggenheim Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao stands on the banks of the Bilbao estuary as one of the defining landmarks of late 20th-century architecture and contemporary art. Designed by architect Frank Gehry and opened in 1997, the building is distinguished by its undulating titanium shell, which shifts in appearance with the light and reflects the riverside setting in which it sits.

The museum houses a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art featuring major international artists, alongside a programme of significant temporary exhibitions. Beyond its collections, the building itself is widely regarded as a work of architecture in its own right, studied and recognised across the world.

In front of the entrance, Jeff Koons' sculpture Puppy —a 12.4-metre-tall terrier covered in tens of thousands of living plants— has become the museum's most recognisable image and one of Bilbao's defining visual symbols. Since its opening, the Guggenheim has served as a catalyst for the urban and cultural transformation of the city, establishing Bilbao as a leading cultural destination in Euskadi-Basque Country and across Europe.
