Elorrio
- A legendary journeyLekeitio — Vitoria-Gasteiz
Description
Elorrio is a historic town in the Durangaldea region of Bizkaia whose old quarter ranks among the most remarkable historic-artistic ensembles in Euskadi. Renaissance palaces, heraldic shields, stone fountains and carved crosses line its streets and squares, bearing witness to the prosperity and character the town built up since its medieval founding.
Among its most distinctive and varied features is its collection of wayside crosses, considered one of the oldest in Europe. Of the nine crosses preserved in the town, the Kurutziaga cross stands out for its sculptural quality. Just outside the urban centre lies the Argiñeta necropolis, a pre-Romanesque funerary site of significant historical importance.
Beyond the old town, Elorrio is surrounded by scattered rural hamlets set among hills and valleys, accessible via green walking routes. This combination of built heritage and natural landscape defines the town's identity and its place within the Durangaldea territory.
