Basque Coast Geopark

The Basque Coast Geopark is a territory of nearly 90 square kilometres nestled between the Cantabrian Sea and the Basque mountains, made up of the Gipuzkoan municipalities of Deba, Mutriku and Zumaia. It has been part of the European and Global Geoparks Networks since 2010, and in 2015 it was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark — a recognition that highlights the outstanding value of its geological landscapes and sites.

At first glance, the territory impresses with its succession of greens stretching from the coastline inland, where pastures and forests follow one another in steady rhythm. But its real significance lies underground: the strata visible in its cliffs preserve the record of some of the most remarkable episodes in the recent history of the Earth, a natural archive of rare depth.

The Basque Coast Geopark combines a coastal landscape of great harmony with a geological record that makes this small territory a key reference for understanding the history of our planet.
