Barrika

Barrika is a municipality in the Uribe district of Bizkaia, located on the Cantabrian coast. Its shoreline is defined by tall cliffs and geological formations that make the passage of geological time visible. Below them lie three beaches of natural character and distinct scenery: Barrika, Meñakoz and Muriola. The final stretch of the Butrón river runs through the municipality for approximately two kilometres before reaching the sea, adding a fluvial element to the territory.

Barrika is considered one of the oldest settlements in the historical Lordship of Biscay. Archaeological sites documented in the area confirm continuous occupation from ancient times. Whale fishing was for centuries one of the main economic activities of its inhabitants, alongside farming and livestock rearing.

The local heritage includes the church of Santa María and the Butrón estuary as reference points within the municipality. For those travelling along the Bizkaia coast, Barrika offers a stretch of shoreline with its own identity: cliffs, visible geology and beaches with a quiet atmosphere that reward a stop.
