Amurrio

Amurrio is a municipality in the province of Álava, in the Basque Country, surrounded by rural landscapes of oak woodland and pine forest. Its geographical position has historically made it a crossroads — known locally as "El crucero" — linking the interior lands of Castile with the ports of the Cantabrian coast.

The most prominent natural landmark is the Salto del Nervión, a waterfall reaching up to 222 metres, which makes it the tallest on the Iberian Peninsula. Reachable via trails through the surrounding countryside, it draws most of the visitors who come to the area and is the defining natural feature of the municipality.

Beyond its natural setting, Amurrio holds a heritage of cultural interest, including the Gothic parish church of Santa María, which dates to the twelfth century. Walking routes and natural areas complete a destination that reflects both the rural character of the region and the living Basque culture that shapes everyday life here.
