Two Routes to Enjoy the Nervión Waterfall

  • A journey between beginnings and the future
    Orduña — Bilbao

Description

For those who want to go beyond the Monte Santiago viewpoint, the Nervión Waterfall can be approached via two other routes offering completely different perspectives. The route from Untzaga is an out-and-back trail of almost 12 km starting from this small Álava village. There is a small car park about 400 metres from the village. The well-marked path climbs towards the top of the ridge, skirting the cliff edge protected by livestock fencing. As you advance, the waterfall gradually comes into view from different angles until you reach the bed of the Delika river, which must be crossed to reach the viewpoint. This is the least busy of the three routes, allowing for a quieter experience in the natural surroundings. Along the way, take care around the mastiff dogs that guard the sheep flocks in the area: if you encounter one, it is best to give it a wide berth. Those doing this route can also visit the Gujuli waterfall, just a short distance away towards Goiuri. The route from Delika is an 8 km out-and-back trail through the Delika canyon all the way to the base of the waterfall. The trail has no major difficulty beyond crossing the Nervión river at several points, though crossing infrastructure is currently being improved. At the end of the route, a recreational area, a Tibetan bridge and a viewpoint overlooking the canyon are under construction.
