Walk through the Oma Forest in Kortezubi

The Oma Forest, in Kortezubi, within the Urdaibai biosphere reserve area, is one of the most celebrated works of contemporary Basque art. Artist Agustín Ibarrola painted geometric motifs and figures directly onto the trunks of radiata pines, creating a large-scale outdoor work that belongs to the Art and Nature movement — a practice that brings artistic creation into natural settings, using landscape as both medium and raw material. The route passes through 34 artistic groupings spread across the forest. The interplay between two- and three-dimensionality places the visitor at the centre of the experience: images emerge, shift and dissolve depending on the viewpoint and movement through the space. The visit can be done independently or with a guided tour, offered on Saturdays and on special dates. Prior booking is required in both cases. The Oma Forest makes a distinctive stop on any route through Bizkaia or the Urdaibai area.
