What to see > Araba-Álava > Elvillar
Elvillar, a small town that you will recognise by its large church built on the same site where the castle used to be. In fact, you can see how part of its walls were recycled for use on its main façade. Yet Elvillar is, above all, known for other stones… those piled up on its famous dolmen of La Chabola de la Hechicera, so-called because it was once thought that these constructions were the work of witches.
You will discover that the dolmen has little to do with the one in Llanada that you saw some kilometres ago: the Elvillar dolmen has a large corridor of stones, which makes it the longest megalithic construction in the Basque Country.
Sunset is a particularly special time to visit, when the lights of Elvillar and its church begin to shine after the last rays of sun have gone. The panoramic view of the town with the dolmen front and centre is likely one of the most Instagrammable photos of Rioja Alavesa.
Rioja Alavesa is perhaps the most well-known region of Araba/Álava. It certainly is worth a visit both for its excellent wines as well as its historical heritage. Located in the territory’s extreme south, and feeding the Ebro river, the region offers different landscapes, walled cities, and bodegas where highly valuable goods are produced.
