Description
Pagoeta Natural Park, declared in 1998, lies in the pre-coastal zone of Gipuzkoa, in the municipality of Aia, just a few kilometres from the coast between Orio and Zarautz. Its rugged terrain and mild Atlantic climate, with abundant rainfall throughout the year, support lush vegetation: beech forests above 500 metres, oak woodland at lower altitudes, and grasslands on the southern slopes, where livestock farming has long been practised. The park is designated a Special Conservation Zone within the Natura 2000 network.
The Iturraran farmhouse, a 14th-century oak-framed building, serves as the park's gateway and houses the visitor information centre, set within a botanical garden of some 5,000 plant species. Inside the park, the historic Agorregi forge and the Sagastizabal nature school add heritage and educational interest. Marked trails and recreational areas make Pagoeta a popular destination for families and hikers from the surrounding area.
