Otxandio

Otxandio is a village in Biscay, located in the southernmost part of the territory, between the Gorbeia and Urkiola nature parks and near the Urrunaga reservoir. Its main square, of remarkable architectural value, gathers the village's most representative heritage: the town hall, built in 1742 and declared a national monument, with its ashlar masonry, three coats of arms and sundial; the 16th-century church of Santa Mariñe, with its imposing tower and Renaissance nave; the Vulcan fountain, recalling the historic importance of ironwork; and the 19th-century culture house. Together with the bolatoki (skittle alley) and the pelota court, they form a distinctive ensemble. Beyond the square, the emblazoned houses of Uribarrena street and the former 1722 hospital, now a residence for the elderly, stand out. The hermitage of San Martín, set among beech trees, adds a contrast of simplicity and historical value. Surrounded by mountains and with the Urrunaga reservoir offering water activities, Otxandio embodies the monumental and natural character of southern Biscay, bordering Álava.
