Galdames

Galdames is one of the municipalities in the Encartaciones of Bizkaia most closely tied to the mining history of the region. Its territory is organised around several neighbourhoods, each with its own character.

The main centre is the San Pedro neighbourhood, whose square, presided over by the town hall, features a tribute to Martínez de las Rivas. From Montellano, broad views over the municipality can be enjoyed, and the ruins of the birthplace of Antonio Trueba are preserved there — a 19th-century regionalist writer known for his songs, poems and stories rooted in Basque popular life. In Atxuriaga, alongside a recreational area, lies the access point to the Greenway, which follows the old mining railway and connects Galdames with the municipalities of Artzentales, Sopuerta, Abanto-Zierbena, Zierbena and Ortuella.

The most prominent landmark in Galdames is Torre Loizaga, a 14th-century fortress enclosed by a walled precinct, located in the Concejuelo neighbourhood beside the hermitage of Santiago. Reached from the Larrea neighbourhood, it houses a museum of vintage and classic cars with the Rolls Royce as its centrepiece.
