Guided tour of the old quarter of Getaria
- Basque Country in Blue and GreenLekeitio — Zarautz
Description
Getaria is a fishing village in Gipuzkoa, on the Urola Kosta coast, known for its working port and as the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elkano, the first navigator to complete a circumnavigation of the Earth. This guided tour takes visitors through the old quarter to explore the town's medieval origins and the stories embedded in its streets and buildings. The route takes in the parish church, covers the historical role of the port in local life, and pauses at the monument dedicated to Elkano. The guide explains the most significant buildings in the historic ensemble and provides context for what lies behind their facades. The tour requires a minimum of four participants and makes a natural stop for anyone travelling along the Gipuzkoan coast, offering a deeper reading of Getaria beyond its immediate appearance and connecting the destination to the broader maritime history of the Basque Country.
