Discover the Sorginetxe Dolmen in the Llanada Alavesa

Near the village of Arrizala, south of Agurain (Agurain/Salvatierra), stands the Sorginetxe dolmen, a funerary monument built during the Neolithic period. At that time, pastoral communities buried their dead in megalithic structures such as this one, a fact confirmed by the bone remains uncovered during excavations in the nineteenth century. The chamber consists of six stone slabs, one of which has fallen and is now covered by another of considerable size. Its name, which can be loosely translated from Basque as 'house of the witches', comes from one of the many legends surrounding the monument: according to local tradition, it was witches who built it. Access is free, and the dolmen has its own parking area just a short distance away. On a journey through the Llanada Alavesa plain, this stop adds a layer of prehistoric depth to the open landscape — a reminder that what looks like a flat, featureless field has been a place of human presence for thousands of years.
