Description

The Portilla Monumental Complex, in Zambrana (Álava), offers a 3 km circular route designed to guide visitors through a cultural landscape where medieval structures and natural surroundings have merged over centuries. The walk takes approximately ninety minutes and follows ancient paths through the complex's three main areas: the castle at the highest point of the enclosure, the temple with its public and commercial space, and the village of Villavieja, spread across the eastern slope. Along the way, panels featuring images, drawings and diagrams help visitors picture daily life during the settlement's heyday. For a deeper experience, the complex includes immersive digital recreations at specific points on the route, allowing a virtual journey back to the medieval period. Visitors can also follow the route digitally or download a map of the complex beforehand. Located in the municipality of Zambrana, the complex makes a well-rounded stop on a wider journey through the Cuadrilla de Añana, combining medieval history with a well-preserved natural setting.
